  19. <p>     Now that Clinton's down home, he's rolling out the kind of
  20. colorful sayings that Dan Rather usually saves up for election
  21. night. The other day he complained that some folks were
  22. squealing like a pig caught under a gate. Well, you probably had
  23. to be there--and that's the point.
  24. </p>
  25. <p>CLINTON LUCK...
  26. </p>
  27. <p>     But just when he seemed to be rolling in Southern clover,
  28. Willie went off half-cocked at an open mike, lambasting Jesse
  29. Jackson for supposed backstabbing. Now Jesse will likely
  30. orchestrate a prolonged public apologia from the Son of the
  31. South--which, no matter how it goes, may rile black and white
  32. voters alike.

  34. <p>QUAYLE WATCH
  35. </p>
  36. <p>     Will somebody take that boy in hand? Campaigning near
  37. Atlanta, he made the obligatory stop for local chow, ducking
  38. into a barbecue joint for a chopped pork sandwich and iced tea.
  39. But he got it to go--and he went in his limo.
  40. </p>
  41. <p>HOW'S THAT AGAIN?
  42. </p>
  43. <p>     Bob Kerrey had the right cast, but he needs better
  44. writers. Speaking at Atlanta's Spelman College, surrounded by
  45. uniformed veterans (hint, hint), he declared that if Clinton got
  46. the nomination, Bush would open him up like a soft peanut. He
  47. later corrected himself, substituting a boiled peanut, only to
  48. seem stuck on an unfamiliar Southernism.
  49. </p>
  50. <p>JESSE'S WAY
  51. </p>
  52. <p>     The man who won't be king likes to play kingmaker--or at
  53. least kingbreaker. Last week he announced that almost all the
  54. Democrats will meet with him on issues like education, health
  55. and housing. The missing communicant: Bill Clinton.
  56. </p>
  57. <p>ROOTS, BUCHANAN-STYLE
  58. </p>
  59. <p>     He's Washington, he's urbane. But two of his ancestors
  60. served in the Civil War. Bingo! Last week Pat brought flowers
  61. to the small family plot in Mississippi in a timely reminder
  62. that the Buchanans were on the right side in the War of Northern
  63. Aggression.
